Gas made up 59% of Bangladesh’s energy supply in 2020 and fuels more than two-thirds of electricity generation. By 2022, LNG imports accounted for 22% of the country’s total gas demand, making Bangladesh quite susceptible to the global market volatility. As the world is fast distancing from fossil fuels, it is necessary for Bangladesh to make quick moves to decarbonize its energy mix. Currently, the installed renewable energy capacity in Bangladesh stands at 967 MW,  just over 3.7% of total installed power generation capacity. The government of Bangladesh has set a target of covering 40% of its power generation with clean energy by 2041 (including 10% of renewables in power generation).

Quick facts of Bangladesh’s energy mix development:

LNG & Gas

8 small-scale gas and LNG plants, with total capacity of 1,609 MW, are currently under construction. And 5 large-scale plants, with capacity of 8,750MW, are in the planning phase. 2 LNG import terminals in operation and one more was approved in June 2023. According to Global Energy Monitor (GEM), Bangladesh is planning to double its LNG import capacity with a more than 150% increase and has proposed to build 33.3 GW gas power plants.

Solar & Wind

Solar installed capacity stands at 475 MW and installed wind capacity is almost none. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners is reportedly to invest $1.3bn in Bangladesh to develop a 500MW offshore wind farm (greenlighted).  Bangladesh aims to reach 4.1 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, including nearly 2.3 GW of solar capacity.

Coal Power

2 coal-fired power plants in operation with combined installed capacity of 1,845 MW, and seven others under construction, with total capacity of 6,830 MW. In 2021, Bangladesh scrapped plans for 10 coal-fired power plants while in September 2022, the Bangladeshi Government announced plans to add around 4.3GW of coal-based thermal power to address frequent blackouts.

With the theme of “Enhancing Energy Security, Sustainability and Affordability in a Fast Decarbonized World”, the Bangladesh Energy & Power Summit 2024 is going to bring together 200+ senior stakeholders across the value chain to discuss in depth the latest scenarios of LNG & gas trading, decarbonization technologies, power generation, renewable energy project investment and future grid. Besides, exhibition area will also be showcasing technological advances in future fuels, such as green ammonia, hydrogen and offshore wind energy, floating solar PV, energy storage and energy efficiency.
